USA – Casey Phair made history on Tuesday, becoming the youngest player to ever appear in a World Cup match. The 16-year-old South Korean forward came on as a substitute in the 78th minute of her team’s 2-0 loss to Colombia, breaking the previous record held by Nigeria’s Ifeanyi Chiejine.
Phair, who was born in the United States to a Korean mother and an American father, has been a rising star in the South Korean women’s national team. She made her senior debut in 2022 and has already scored four goals in 10 appearances.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be a part of history,” Phair said after the match. “I’m so proud to represent my country and to be able to play at the World Cup. I’m just so happy that I could help the team.”
Phair’s record-breaking appearance is a sign of the growing talent in the South Korean women’s national team. The team is currently ranked 11th in the world and is hoping to make a deep run in this year’s World Cup.
“Casey is a special talent,” South Korea head coach Colin Bell said. “She’s got a lot of potential and I’m excited to see what she can do in the future.”
Phair’s record is unlikely to stand for long. There are a number of other young players who are making waves in the women’s game, including Barcelona’s Ansu Fati, who is only 17 years old. But for now, Phair can enjoy the moment as the youngest player in World Cup history.
